Resource Conservation Speech Contest

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA), in cooperation with Touchstone Energy Cooperatives of South Dakota, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts encourage participation for the  Resource Conservation Speech Contest. The contest theme is “Soil Health: What Will You Leave?

All South Dakota students in grades 9-12 are eligible to compete for $2,300 in higher education scholarships, provided by the East River and Rushmore Electric power cooperatives and South Dakota Rural Electric Association. Five place winners will be selected at the state level, with scholarships awarded to the top three finalists: first place is $1,100; second place is $750; and third place is $450.All contestants participate in contests coordinated by local conservation districts. Local winners advance to area contests held in seven locations. The top area speakers compete at the state finals in Pierre.

The local contest will be held in March at the USDA Center in Sisseton

Lana Nelson

Lana Nelson, a senior at Sisseton High School and Morgan Janisch, a freshman at Sisseton High School both received a $50.00 award from the Roberts Conservation District. They will go on to represent Roberts County at the area speech contest was held in Aberdeen.

Other students from surrounding counties in NE South Dakota competed at the area level contest.

2017 Resource Conservation Contest

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture, Resource Conservation and Forestry Division sponsors a resource conservation-oriented speech contest.   Any  student in grades 9-12 who is enrolled in a South Dakota public or private school or is  home-schooled is eligible to enter.  This year’s topic is: “Soil Health: What Will You Leave?”

The three levels of the contest are local, area, and state.  Two winners from each local contest advance to area contests.  Two winners from each of the seven area contests advance to state competition.

Awards are:

  • First place: $1,100 scholarship
  • Second place: $750 scholarship
  • Third place: $450 scholarship

East River and Rushmore Electric Power Cooperative and South Dakota Rural Electric Association present the winners with scholarships to be used at any accredited South Dakota vocational technical school, college, or university.  Other sponsors include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts.
